Pronounced in French as zhas – MEEN. It means “The Gift from God.”  Jasmine is said to be an organizer with leadership skills, a planner, strong, high achiever and with sound judgment. In France it’s ranked no 194 as the most popular name and in the Netherlands as no 246 for baby girls.

Jasmine is the princess from Aladdin.  She is the prettiest and best princess by far. Jasmine is a beautiful white flower and a powerful aphrodisiac. Widely cultivated for its flowers, jasmine is enjoyed in the garden, as a house plant and as cut flowers. The delicate jasmine flower opens only at night and may be plucked in the morning when the tiny petals are tightly closed, then stored in a cool place until night. The petals begin to open between six and eight in the evening, as the temperature lowers.

The flowers have to be gathered at night because the odour of jasmine is more powerful after dark. 

These flowers are used in regular worship at home as well as for hair ornaments (for the girls and women of the house).

Jasmine flower vendors selling ready-made garlands of jasmine, bunches of jasmine, as well as flowers by weight, are a common sight on city streets in many parts of India. They may be found around entrances to temples, on major thoroughfares, and in major business areas. In South India married women wear it in their hair as symbol of their married status.

Jasmine rice, also known as Thai Hom Mali. A variety of long-grain rice cultivated in Thailand. It is very fragrant and when cooked it is slightly sticky (because of amylopectin (a soluble polysaccharide and greatly divided polymer of glucose found in plants. It is one of the two components of starch, the other being amylose)), but flavorful. It is often used for traditional Southeast Asian dishes and is also known as Thai fragrant rice, a name that applies to the jasmine fragrance provided when the rice cooks. It is available in both white and brown varieties. Although fragrant and delicious, the white variety does not compete with the other ingredients in a dish. The brown variety contains the bran, which provides more nutrition and fiber, but requires additional cooking time.

Jasmine hedge in my grandmother's garden

The pleasing fragrance of star jasmine (not a true jasmine at all, but very reminiscent of jasmine) dominated the atmosphere of her immaculate garden. The jasmine hedge was in full flower and the smell gorgeous.

You know, I was thinking… If I ever have another daughter, I will call her Jasmine.
